The Spider-Man Movie Retrospect - PART 1: The Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Does whatever a spider can. Almost 60 years, Spider-Man became  one of the greatest superheroes of all time, first appear in Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man being the first teenage superhero, who doesn't need help for an older mentor character, but becomes his own hero with great power also comes with great responsibility, not bad for a character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, with help from other writers and artists, too. With all that Spider-Man been also appeared beyond comics, like in cartoons, video games, selling fruit pies, ever appeared both in a PBS series and as a toku henshin hero, Japanese Spider-Man coming soon to a Kaiju Thursday near you, with all that their one media that Spider-Man strangely been ignore that being a feature film, while ever other Marvel characters did have a movie, before Spider-Man, from Howard the Duck to Captain America, yes they are Marvel films, but to compare to with DC did in the late 1970’s to late 1990’s in their films, yeah all scenes Batman is way better than Captain America stole a truck, that scene was reference in Winter Soldier, with all that changes when Marvel being revolution comic book movies after the box office dud of DC’s Batman and Robin, with New Line Cinema's Blade released on the fellow year soon two years later, 20 Century Fox released X-Men, another two years later, Sony Pictures released with Spider-Man, before that there were two unreleased Spider-Man movies, one by Cannon Pictures would featuring Tom Cruise as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus as the villain, before changes to Peter turning into a Man-Spider by Dr.Zorks before Stan Lee ditch that idea, and Lizard comes in the villain before it hits rock bottom, and the other is James Cameron’s take of the character with Leo DiCaprio as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and both Sandman and Electro as the main villains also expected why they aren’t in the 1990’s Spider-Man cartoon instead we got Shocker and jealous ex-boyfriend Hydro-Man, Cameron’s version was going to much darker, also bring the idea of organic web-shooters which was bought over to the movie that we know today, so yeah after this version was also never seen the light ever again, and I didn’t mention the King of Pop himself, Micheal Jackson almost bought Marvel itself so he can play as Spider-Man, well unfortunately Mickey Mouse alright did that in 2009. This leads into the Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man released on May 3, 2002, this movie was biggest thing in that summer, it’s even bigger than Star Wars at the time, because how iconic, Spider-Man himself is, so movie is pretty much: When Peter Parker played by Tobey Maguire was bitten by bio-engineered spider in a class field trip, he start having changes to his body and also gain super powers, to do whatever a spider can, after he wrestles Macho Man Randy Savage, he unexpected left this burglar escape, and unfortunately leads into the death of his uncle, Ben Parker, with this grief he becomes the crime fighting superhero, Spider-Man stopped the plans of the villainous Green Goblin played by Willem DeFoe, who is no other than his best friend’s father, Norman Osborn. Overall Spider-Man is great movie, it’s tell the origins minus that they changes some things, well with Tobey Maguire was great as Peter Parker to understand of how he been going through with his life and the same time sees him as Spider-Man which isn’t as great as Andrew Garfeild’s or Tom Holland’s take on the character, also the costume for this movie is very different from the comics, with silver webbing and lens, the spider emblems are more heroic than before, and the blues are changes to dark blue, however the movie’s villain, the Green Goblin, is whole different animal compared to Jack Nicolson’s Joker from the 1989 Batman film, and ever Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor from the Donner Superman movies, man DeFoe out did he’s take owning not with the Goblin, but as Norman was well, something that Amazing films didn’t do, and that costume and glider is still decent design, but should been that unused Goblin mask, that’s way better, yes many complain that costume looks like something out of Power Rangers, but he looks more of like you know who, that what Super Sentai ever come up with, there’s also Norman’s son, Harry played by James Franco, boy this would not age well, unlike Ned from the MCU Spider-Man movies, he is not really a good best friend to Peter, plus he dates his best friend’s crush, dang, speaking of Mary Jane Waston played by Kirsten Dunst, she is what the comics kinda portrayed as but with some twerks here and there, like how strange that her and Harry go to the same school with Peter, but she at least should been tease in the first movie like her been hinting at in comics, instead we could got someone like Liz Allen, and Ned Leeds as Peter’s friend while Harry is a way at boarding school for this movie something that got fix in Spider-Man Homecoming, also we got Peter’s lovable aunt, May played by Rosemary Harris, she is at the time the best and comic based, she is bring the character of how old she truly is before other versions of the character got strangely getting a young and hip, and then there’s James Johan Jameson played by J.K. Simmons, best character in these movies, hands down, there’s Robbie Robinson, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, The Burglar, & Peter’s uncle, Ben Parker played by Cliff Robertson, have to the reason of why Peter is the man that he is today, and he’s death bring emotion to Peter and the grief that he feel. Yeah that is the first Spider-Man movie, okay then in two years later they made a sequel, and man what a sequel it was, released on June 30,2004, Spider-Man 2 is regarded as one of the greatest comic book movies of all time, up there with 2008’s The Dark Knight, and 2018/2019’s Avengers: Infinity War + Endgame, well that go like: After 2 years of being Spider-Man, Peter Parker is been juggling multiple places to go, then after meeting up he’s idol, Doctor Otto Octavius played by Alfred Molina, who created a fusion reactor, that expecting cause a exploding that ultimately bond him and four robotic arms, while Peter is losing faith that results he’s friendship with Harry crumbing, seeing the girl of his dreams getting married to his boss’ son, John, and giving up as Spider-Man after his lost his powers, after weeks of being just himself, until Doctor Octopus comes he’s head again and kidnaps Mary Jane, now Peter will return as Spider-Man to face this multi-arm menace, while the first one have it’s charms, the second one is really good, with focus of Peter’s juggling as Spider-Man and going college and working at the Bugle, he losing his powers is weird it’s like having Superman lose his powers, this reason because the movie itself was inspired by Amazing Spider-Man #50, Spider-Man: No More! story line, but with Doctor Octopus replacing Kingpin, there are returning characters like Mary Jane, Harry Osborn, The Daily Bugle crew, and Aunt May, but there also new characters like Doctor Curt Connors or Lizard in the comics, Johan’s wife, Debra and their son, John or Man-Wolf also in the comics, too, the landlord who wants the rent, and his daughter, & most important is Doctor Octopus, who was going appear in the first movie as a side villain, but cut, is a awesome villain since he is Spider-Man’s arch-rival while Green Goblin is his arch-nemesis, after losing his wife from a exploding, and the only things lift are four robotic arms that are the uses of both practical effects and CGI, as on the subject of Doctor Octopus there was originally he asked Tony Stark to helping, but this was replaced with Harry instead, however Iron Man himself did in fact appear in a Spider-Man movie years later, or they mention Doctor Strange, another maybe foreshadowing, also Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was going to be in a cameo in the first movie, but it was cut for time, yeah the movie itself did really well that much a third film was made, released on May 4, 2007 Spider-Man 3 was the final Spider-Man movie directed by Sam Raimi and the rest of the cast and crew, unlike the last two movies, Spidey has to deal just one villain, but three which is a criticize we will talked about this issue later for right now talk about the movie itself: When Peter Parker’s life got a perfect balance with his job as photographer, gets good grades as collage, ever attendances he’s girlfriend, Mary Jane’s Broadway musical, but soon things turn the worst with his friend, Harry Osborn turns into the new Green Goblin, and tries to killed him, at the same time a petty criminal and Uncle Ben’s true killer named, Flint Marko played by Thomas Haden Church escapes from prison, later got become the villainous Sandman, after got exposed from a nuclear experiment, with this unexpected truth, Peter is going after the Sandman, soon he will get new black suit which is actually the alien symbiote, Venom that made Peter’s life upside down as he become bit looney and a jerk to some of people that he loves, than later as he ditched the symbiote that bonds to  another photographer name Eddie Brock played by Topher Grace, now Peter will face not only Sandman, but Venom as well, this time he isn’t alone to face he also got help from Harry together to save the city. Overall Spider-Man is actually shockingly good, I know you want to say, “But Spiderus how is Spider-Man 3, good, without overlooking the flaws and why it is a very bad movie.”  To answer that question, because it is time, and different point-of-view, when this movie was out, many were mixed to down right hating the movie due to the change of Peter’s character halfway thought to too many villains, but they didn’t overlook the good in this movie, as Peter’s ego changes once he is bonding with the black costume turning him into this dark version of himself, who ruins his love ones, and also ruins Eddie Brock’s career, too, is something different from the comics when Peter thought he got a hold of a machine after his standard costume was heavy damage in battle during the 1980’s Secret Wars story line that gives him the black costume, and got used it for some stories, like to Kraven’s Last Hunt to Transformers #3, before he ditch the symbiote and it with Eddie Brock, and other people include his son well speaking of Eddie Brock, man he is the most strangely character to put in the movie, since he is there as Spider-Man’s new photographer despairs that Peter already did that job in the first, since he also bit jerk to Peter, too until when Peter got hold of the symbiote, the tables has turn once he ruining Eddie’s career as he is view as a fraud after he is Photoshop as random picture of Spider-Man, and later asked God himself to killed Peter Parker, talking about of how dark this character gets, once he is bonding with symbiote and becomes Venom, he is the most dark and monstrous side comes out, as he makes a deal with Sandman along of his tough guy voice, soon he kidnapped Mary Jane, and fight Spider-Man and Green Goblin II, as least they make used of Venom’s weakness of sound and fire, now on to Harry Osborn as he’s character arc has turn to worst as he takes on the mantle of the Green Goblin, despairs the first trailer called him Hobgoblin or marketing called him New Goblin, Harry at first was going to killed Peter until he hit in the head causing amnesia, seeing the old Harry back brief until the ghost of Norman knock some sense of him, and make Mary Jane focus breaking up with Peter, later Peter used the black suit and kick Harry’s butt yeah that pie and wink doesn’t work now Harry, later after Peter asked Harry for help, his butler comes in and told him about the actual truth of his father’s death, this makes him help Peter and this was cool fight since we never seen both Peter and Harry team-up in the comics, and this is why we will never see Harry as a good version of the Green Goblin, hopefully in a future comic for now is what is this, and he’s death was the most sad, after been thought two movies and their friendship was bit rocky once Peter becomes Spider-Man, but seeing him dying front both Peter and Mary Jane is very touching, well there’s one character that I ever mention that is Gwen Stacy played by Bryce Dallas Howard, and she just there, there some reason of why she just there, other thing she be used as Peter’s college buddy, and Eddie’s girlfriend, okay making her Eddie Brock’s girlfriend is just weird, and the only scene where she in danger with she fell down a building before Spider-Man saves her, unlike the comics where’s he fails to save her, here okay then, also her father is there too, now talking about the most tragic character in the movie, Flint Marko aka the Sandman, man this character is most interest, because they make him from a goon with sand powers to a heartbroken father, who wants try good in the world, but fails trying, you feel sad that he wants to be good for his sick daughter, and him try to escapes from police because he have accidental shot Uncle Ben, at the first Peter wants revenge that he killed his uncle, than once he make that deal with Venom, than all bets are off, and he tries to kill Peter until Harry show up, after that he told Peter everything, and he is forgiving him of what he have done, so yeah this trilogy of films make fans of Spider-Man really happy, from what they are at the time, movies that bring Spider-Man’s journey to live, but after Spider-Man 3 bomb at the box office and planned Spider-Man 4 with Vulture as the main villain also Black Cat, and Spider-Man 5 with Carnage as the main villain where cancelled, then Sony do the one thing to do, that is reboot this spider.  Also I forgot to mention that Jake Gyllenhaal was almost replacing Tobey as Spidey, but that didn’t happen, also the memes.
